Clergy, religious & lay representatives from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur convened at St Ignatius Church (SIC) on 18 June 2022 for the Diocesan Pre-Synod Assembly. Participants listened to feedback that emerged from across the archdiocese, dialogued with each other about the current reality of the local Church, and discerned the Holy Spirit’s call for the archdiocese on the path of synodality. This gathering is part of a two-year process called “a synod on synodality” – officially known as Synod 2021-2023: For a Synodal Church initiated by His Holiness Pope Francis on 10 Oct 2021.

Bishops around the world will consult with parishes, priests & religious, and Catholic universities before coming together for the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome in Oct 2023. It is hoped that this process of listening, sharing & discerning will also contribute to greater zeal for communion, participation & mission. Archbishop Wojciech Zaluski (Apostolic Nuncio to Malaysia), Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam and Most Reverend Julian Leow, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, were also present at the assembly.

Code of Canon Law 342 states that the Synod of Bishops is a group of bishops selected from different parts of the world, who meet together at specified times to promote the close relationship between the Roman Pontiff and the bishops. These bishops, by their counsel (consilii), assist the Roman Pontiff in the:
(i) Defence and increase of faith & morals,
(ii) Preservation & strengthening of ecclesiastical discipline, and
(iii) Consideration of questions concerning the mission of the Church in the world.
