RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) 2019/2020 Journey (English & Bahasa Malaysia) candidates were baptised and confirmed on Saturday 5 September 2020 at a Service Rite in St Ignatius Church (SIC). The Rite was celebrated, under exceptional circumstances, by SIC Parish Priest Fr Andrew Wong CDD and Assistant Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Ng CDD. A total of 42 candidates were baptised and confirmed while eight candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In his address after the Gospel reading, Fr Andrew shared that adult baptism is usually held during the Easter Vigil Mass with three rites of scrutiny before that. All who are attending the Vigil Mass would gather outside the church to partake in the rite of blessing & lighting of the paschal candle, followed by procession into the church. The current Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated a very special rite with the performance of three rites of scrutiny and the rite of baptism & confirmation.

Fr Andrew also reminded the newly baptised and confirmed that faith does not stop at baptism. Baptism is only the beginning of faith. As faith is a journey which requires us to experience discovery and growth in life. After baptism, we have the responsibility to strive to live a Christian faith. Through our words and deeds, we influence those around us who have not yet known God. In other words, we need to work harder to resist secular temptations and not to assimilate secular values.

Being baptised, Fr Andrew added, does not mean our journey of faith will be smooth sailing. But when facing challenges and pain, we will face and overcome them with a new perspective and a new attitude. When we are down, recall our enthusiasm during our baptism and let this fire ignite us again. We also need to remember that the resurrected Christ is always with us. Christ is our truest, most reliable, closest, most powerful and most sacred friend. In closing, Fr Andrew wished our new Catholics happiness and steady growth in their journey of faith.

The Service Rite was live-streamed on Youtube to enable all family members and friends of the candidates who are unable to attend to view at home too. On the same day at the 6 pm Mass in SIC, these neophytes participated in the Sacrament of Eucharist and received their first Holy Communion. The entire congregation welcomed all into the community. RCIA Team would like to thank Frs Andrew and Lawrence, church ministries, sponsors, godparents and parishioners in extending their prayers to make the celebration a memorable one. SIC Second Assistant Parish Priest Fr Martin Then CDD was also present during the event.
