First-Ever Mass for the Deaf @ SIC

For parishioners who have not attended one before, the first-ever Mass for the Deaf held at St Ignatius Church (SIC) on Sunday 21 January 2018 at 4 pm was quite likely the quietest Eucharistic celebration they have ever attended in their life. Before start of Mass, main celebrant Fr Michael Chua [Ecclesiastical Assistant for the Catholic Ministry for the Deaf (CMfD); Parish Priest, Church of Jesus Caritas; and Administrator, Chapel of Kristus Aman] briefed about 100 attendees at the cafeteria venue that kneeling and standing were dispensed with to allow the deaf present amongst them to concentrate on the signing done by the celebrant, commentator & reader. SIC Parish Priest Fr Andrew Wong CDD was the concelebrant and Br Joseph Lim CDD was in attendance.

Fr Michael hoped that more churches are open to the celebration of Masses for the Catholic deaf community and more Catholics will take up learning sign language to better interact and serve their fellow brothers- and sisters-in-Christ. Sign language is a system of communication using visual gestures and signs to convey meaning. Attendees were served light refreshments during fellowship after Mass.
