Parishioners of St Ignatius Church (SIC) attending the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord at 8.45 am on 8 January were able to witness the installation of Fr Andrew Wong, CDD as Parish Priest of SIC. His Grace Archbishop Julian Leow entrusted Fr Andrew with the keys of the parish church and exhorted him to always serve the faithful of SIC with zeal, fidelity and sincere devotion. After the homily by Archbishop Julian, Parish Pastoral Council chairman Lourdes Abishegam read aloud the letter of appointment after which Fr Andrew renewed the promises he made at his priestly ordination. Fr Andrew has been serving as Parish Priest of SIC since 1 July 2016. SIC Assistant Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Ng, CDD and Fr Francis Ng, CDD were the concelebrants at the Mass.

CDD Celebrates 90th Anniversary

cdd90a

Celebration and jubilation were very much the mood of the evening at St Ignatius Church (SIC) on 4 January 2017. For it was the anniversary of the founding of the Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord [Congregatio Discipulorum Domini (CDD) in Latin] in Hebei Province, China, by Celso Costantini (elected Cardinal in 1953) exactly nine decades ago to the day. A thanksgiving Mass was held at 7 pm with Fr Philip Tan, CDD (Provincial for Malaysia) as the main celebrant and concelebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Soter Fernandez, His Grace Archbishop Julian Leow, His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam, SIC Parish Priest Fr Andrew Wong, CDD; SIC Assistant Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Ng, CDD; Fr Francis Ng, CDD; Fr Stephen Ng, CDD; Fr Lucas Ng, CDD, Fr Thomas Koo, CDD; Fr Raymond Pereira, Fr Albet Arokiasamy, Fr Justin Jonnanis, SJ and Fr Alvin Ho, SJ. More than 400 parishioners were in attendance.

After Mass, Archbishop Julian blessed the new lift and rooftop hall at Costantini Community Centre. Then priests joined parishioners for a fellowship dinner at the hall during which a video about the CDD order was screened, cutting of a birthday cake, as well as attendees praying over Archbishop Julian whose birthday was on 3 January. The anniversary with the theme Heart of the Founder, Acts of the Disciples was also concurrently celebrated in Malacca. Happy anniversary CDD and we pray that God Almighty will continue to guide & bless them as they minister to SIC, the wider church community (especially the Mandarin-speaking) and other parishes.

First Bahasa Mass in SIC

firstmalaymass1

A milestone event took place at St Ignatius Church (SIC) just hours after ushering in a new year with a countdown and fireworks display at the stroke of midnight – its first-ever Eucharistic celebration conducted in Bahasa Malaysia. Starting at 1.30 pm, about 200 parishioners including our Bahasa-speaking brothers and sisters in Christ from East Malaysia excitedly sang hymns and followed the Order of Mass which were projected on screen. SIC Assistant Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Ng, CDD was the main celebrant and Parish Priest Fr Andrew Wong, CDD was the concelebrant. Fr Lawrence hopes that more Bahasa-speaking Catholics will attend and serve as lectors, wardens, choir members & in other capacities at the Masses which will be held every first Sunday of the month at 1.30 pm in SIC. Parishioners are encouraged to attend (even if they have already attended an earlier Mass) to show their support. According to the Code of Canon Law, baptised Catholics may receive holy communion twice on the same day.

Sharing Yuletide Joy with Orang Asli

by Elizabeth Yam

A visit to the Orang Asli Settlement in Kampung Sebir, Negeri Sembilan, by several parishioners of St Ignatius Church (SIC) led by Assistant Parish Priest Fr Lawrence Ng, CDD on the night of Wednesday 28 December turned out to be both an educational and joyous experience. The warm reception given was unexpected for most of the visitors – it was more like a homecoming – but not surprising to Fr Lawrence as he is no stranger to the numerous families (many of whom are Catholics) in this tiny settlement. Once the food rations of rice, oil and other essentials donated by the Parish Integral Human Development Ministry (PIHDM) were handed over, all present settled down to a hearty meal of home cooked food prepared by the Orang Asli.

Parishioners were given a tour of the newly-built chapel, and later, settled onto the floor comfortably and were made to feel at home by their gracious hosts. Rounding off the evening, several Orang Asli guitarists led the singing of Christmas carols in the spirit of love & joy. It may have been an isolated location far from the bright city lights but the occasion had a wonderful sense of fellowship and warmth centred on Jesus our Emmanuel who was born to bring glad tidings of peace and goodwill to all men.

Sister Patricia Choong of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) – a familiar face at St Ignatius Church (SIC) – has been transferred to Kuantan, Pahang, to serve the parishioners and people there. Sister Pat (as she is affectionately known) has served SIC for many years especially in providing spiritual guidance to the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and many Basic Ecclesial Communities, just to name a few. We thank Sister for her invaluable contributions to our parish and wish her all the best in her endeavour to build up the People of God in Kuantan and beyond.
